I. Mission Statement
The mission of the Office of Institutional Research (OIR) is to enhance and foster the institutional effectiveness of UCI by providing analysis, institutional research, and management information that supports and strengthens the operation, decision making, and planning processes of the Offices of the Chancellor, the Executive Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and the Irvine Division of the Academic Senate. Considered a campuswide resource, the Office also delivers analytical support and consultative service for administrative and academic units.
II. Organization
The OIR is a unit in Planning & Budget and reports to the Vice Chancellor - Planning & Budget, who reports jointly to the Chancellor and the Executive Vice Chancellor.
III. Description of Functions
- Analysis and Institutional Research--The OIR is responsible for conducting a wide range of institutional research and Institutional Research to support and foster efficient campus planning and administration. Examples include faculty instructional workload; short- and long-range enrollment planning; space and classroom utilization; attitudinal and behavioral characteristics of prospective, current, and former students; students' time to degree and attrition; employee data, and related issues; faculty research activity; long term financial analysis; and administrative and student support program evaluation.
The Office provides analytical and informational services for the committees of the Irvine Division of the Academic Senate. The office also provides these services for academic and administrative units for program evaluations and unit planning. The assistance may range from the identification and interpretation of available data to survey design and advice concerning the use of statistical tools, or it may entail a comprehensive analytical study.
- Campus Planning Support--OIR has the responsibility for coordinating and integrating planning data and planning analytical support for the offices of the Chancellor, the Executive Vice Chancellor, the Budget Office, Capital Planning, the Office of Academic Affairs, the Academic Senate, Student Affairs, and Administrative and Business Services. OIR creates models and develops analytical tools to integrate the campus' various planning efforts in such areas as capital, space, enrollment, housing, financial, computing, and administrative planning. The Office also recommends strategies to achieve planning objectives within internal and external political and environmental contexts.
- Information Management --The Office develops and maintains a campus data warehouse that serves as the source of official UCI data. It is responsible for developing systems to ensure that campus analytical and planning data requirements are met, as well as providing the necessary information to support executive level decision making. As part of these responsibilities, the office provides leadership in assuring the quality, accuracy, and commonality of campus data by working with campus operational computing systems managers. Additionally, the Office is responsible for reporting and disseminating a consistent set of data to members of the campus community and to the public in accordance with established procedures and in response to special requests from campus offices and departments, the Office of the President, state and federal agencies, and external agencies, corporations, and organizations. The Office is additionally responsible for developing and maintaining instructional statistics via the Academic Instruction Management System (AIMS).
