MISSION

We perform research, analysis, and reporting that supports campus academic planning, strategic decision-making, enrollment management, and program assessment. Our office collects, analyzes, and interprets a wide variety of data about UC Irvine and its external environment for the purposes of assessing institutional outcomes, measuring institutional performance against strategic planning goals, comparative analysis with peer institutions, and reporting to campus constituences and external agencies. Our office reports to the Vice Chancellor–Planning and Budget.

CAMPUS DATA

UC Irvine College Portrait

To help current and future students and their families better understand what UC Irvine has to offer, the UC Irvine College Portrait presents in an easy-to-read format a variety of information on UCI's enrollments, degree offerings, cost of attendance, retention and graduation rates, undergraduate admissions, student housing, campus health and safety, student experiences and perceptions, and learning outcomes. To make comparisons with other institutions easier, it uses a format similar to the College Portrait developed as part of the Voluntary System of Accountability. The UC Irvine College Portrait will be updated annually; the current version is as of September 1, 2008.

Common Data Set (CDS)

Originally developed as a collaboration among the College Board, Peterson's, U.S. News & World Report, and the higher education community, the Common Data Set (commonly referred to as CDS) is a set of common data items often requested by publishers of college guidebooks, with standard definitions of terms and a specific set of counting rules. This standard format makes the CDS useful for comparisons across institutions. We publish a new version of the CDS each year, usually in the Winter Quarter. The following versions of the CDS are currently available:
     2005-06      2006-07      2007-08      2008-09

Statistical Portrait of UC Irvine

The Statistical Portrait of UC Irvine contains a variety of data about UC Irvine's rankings in The Top American Research Universities reports; undergraduate student demand and enrollment; undergraduate student quality; undergraduate graduation rates; selected results from the UCUES survey; campus revenues by fund source; total research and development expenditures; appointments of new faculty; numbers of faculty; student-faculty ratios; private support; and endowed chairs.

UC Accountability Framework

The new UC Accountability Framework (located at the UC Office of the President's website) is the first attempt to comprehensively assess and share the University's progress in meeting key teaching, research and public service goals across its 10 campuses. The annual report called for in the framework will help inform the University's strategic planning, budgeting and performance management. The draft annual report has been posted for public review and comment, with a final version scheduled to be published in May 2009. Thereafter, the report will be updated and published annually.

Degrees awarded

Note: There are two ways of defining a "degree-year." The first defines it as Summer-to-Spring (Summer + Fall + Winter + Spring) and the second defines it as Fall-to-Summer (Fall + Winter + Spring + Summer). The degree reports that were posted on the previous version of our website used the Summer-to-Spring degree-year.

Many reports of degrees awarded (e.g., IPEDS, U.S. News) use the Summer-to-Spring degree-year, while most reports of graduation rates use the Fall-to-Summer degree-year.

The annual Summer-to-Spring report will be available by late October each year; the Fall-to-Summer report will be available by late January.

INSTRUCTIONAL DATA

Student credit hours (SCH)

Note: There are two ways of calculating instructional workload in terms of student credit hours (SCH): 1) crediting SCH to the Payroll Home Department of the course instructor(s), referred to as the " PHD" method; and 2) crediting SCH to the Department that Offered the Course, known as the "DOC" method.

PHD: BASED ON THE PAYROLL HOME DEPARTMENT OF THE INSTRUCTOR

Because the PHD method relies on data provided to OIR by departmental staff during the 7th to 10th weeks of a quarter, the PHD SCH report for a given quarter is not available until the following quarter (i.e., the Fall Quarter report is not available until Winter Quarter). SCH calculated by the PHD method for Winter and Spring 2009 will be available by June 15, 2009 and July 15, 2009, respectively.

Total SCH by coordinating point:      2001-02 through 2007-08
Total SCH by school or major administrative unit:      2001-02 through 2007-08
Total SCH by payroll home department:      2001-02 through 2007-08
Total SCH by payroll home department and quarter:
     2001-02      2002-03      2003-04      2004-05      2005-06      2006-07      2007-08      2008-09 (Fall only)

The PHD method depends upon the accurate identification of course instructors for each class section each quarter. As shown in the following report, this is achieved for all academic units but one. The exception is the School of Medicine because the M.D. courses were not tracked by OIR from 2001-02 through 2005-06.

Proportion of unidentified instructors in courses:      2001-02 through 2008-09 (Fall only)

DOC: BASED ON THE ACADEMIC UNIT SPONSORING THE COURSE

Total SCH by school, three-term total (Fall + Winter + Spring):      2001-02 through 2008-09
Total SCH by course offering department, three-term total (Fall + Winter + Spring):      2001-02 through 2008-09
Total SCH by course offering department and quarter:
     2001-02      2002-03      2003-04      2004-05      2005-06      2006-07      2007-08      2008-09

Student workload FTE

Note: There are two ways of calculating student instructional workload FTE: 1) crediting FTE to the Payroll Home Department of the course instructor(s), referred to as the "PHD" method; and 2) crediting FTE to the Department that Offered the Course, known as the "DOC" method.

PHD: BASED ON THE PAYROLL HOME DEPARTMENT OF THE INSTRUCTOR

Because the PHD method relies on data provided to OIR by departmental staff during the 7th to 10th weeks of a quarter, the PHD FTE report for a given quarter is not available until the following quarter (i.e., the Fall Quarter report is not available until Winter Quarter). FTE calculated by the PHD method will be available by June 15, 2009. (Spring 2009 data will be available by July 15, 2009.)

DOC: BASED ON THE ACADEMIC UNIT SPONSORING THE COURSE

FTE calculated by the DOC method will be available by June 15, 2009.
